De-escalation is a skill that attracts a lot of attention and is in high demand. De-escalation can be difficult to define. It could be defined as reducing the level of intensity of a conflict. Juveniles challenge us through their behavior. Officers’ responses to juvenile behavior can serve to either escalate or de-escalate the juvenile’s behavior. These challenges can prompt reactions from officers. This training will cover strategies on how juveniles’ behavior and their emotions can be influenced and modified. Simple solutions tend to get forgotten in the chaos, confusion and lack of confidence. The skill is to try and match the intervention with the behavior. Strategies will include those for special education and autistic children.
The instructor for this training will draw upon his 33 years of law enforcement experience, including assignments as a SWAT negotiator and School Resource Officer.
