Scott graduated from Michigan State University (MSU) with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and holds a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science with focus on Investigations. Scott began a career in the fire service in 2002. In 2014 he became a Law Enforcement Officer and promoted to Fire Investigator. Since then, he has investigated 550+ fires in both public and private investigations.
In 2008 he began working as a Medical Examiner Investigator and has investigated 1000+ deaths including deployments to New York City and Lahaina wildfires with the federal Victim Information Center team.
Scott’s professional goal is to become a subject matter expert in fatal fire investigations and share this knowledge through instruction, consulting, and investigating.

Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
This presentation looks beyond the initial investigation of a fire fatality and examines in greater detail complexities unique to the fire fatality including: how the body burns, mass fatality incidents, special circumstance scenes, and preparing for Daubert/trial. Attendees will also be educated on how to interpret results from the Medical Examiner/Coroner’s report(s).
Investigating a fire that involves fatalities requires specific knowledge and methodology. The fire investigator will, in most cases, work side by side with other agencies and investigators. Preparing for these events will result in a more thorough scene examination, enhanced cooperation between investigators and helping us achieve our ultimate goals of:
1. Determining the origin and cause of the fire
2. Seeking justice for victims AND
3. Providing information to help prevent similar events
