Scott graduated from Michigan State University (MSU) with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. Scott began a career in the fire service in 2002 and became a Fire Investigator in 2016 and has investigated 500+ fires in both public and private investigations. In 2008 he began working as a Medical Examiner Investigator and has investigated 1000+ deaths including deployments to New York City and Lahaina wildfires with the federal Victim Information Center team. Scott is currently completing requirements for a Masters degree in Forensic Science with focus on Investigations.
Scott’s professional goal Is to become a subject matter expert in fatal fire investigations and share this knowledge through instruction, consulting, and investigating.

“What Every Investigator Needs To Know”
Investigating a fire fatality is one of the most complex and demanding scenes the investigator will encounter. A fatality at the scene of a fire introduces multiple new challenges to the investigation. Due in part to the relative infrequency fire fatalities are encountered, as well as the extra scrutiny and pressure accompanied with the fatality, these scenes can produce unnecessary stress. This presentation will help the investigator manage the scene effectively and efficiently.
In addition, the fire investigator will most likely be investigating the scene with a Medical Examiner/Coroner Investigator, Police Department detective and possibly other entities. Understanding each other’s roles will facilitate a better, more thorough and well-run investigation.
This presentation is designed to:
1) Increase the investigators skill in processing a fire fatality
2) Develop greater understanding between multiple agencies, thereby increasing working relationships and making for a more effectively run scene
3) Explain fire effects on the body and the body’s role in fires
4) Educate on the role of the Medical Examiner/Coroner and the postmortem exam; what happens and what can we hope to learn from it
Target Audience:
The material will be relevant to Fire Investigators, both public and private, Law Enforcement Officers, Crime Scene Technicians, and those in the forensic medical community.
