Thomas Martin
Tom Martin, Senior Investigator, New York State Police, (retired)
Senior Investigator Tom Martin retired from the New York State Police after a twenty-two year career. Tom began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a uniformed New York State Trooper, and spent the majority of his career assigned to a full time crime scene/ major case investigation unit, retiring as the supervisor of that unit.
Upon his retirement, Tom established his forensic consulting company, Crime Scene Forensics, LLC, and provides forensic training and case consultations nationwide. He continues to work regularly in the field of forensic investigations and concentrates on homicide and questioned death scene investigations, bloodstain pattern analysis cases, shooting incident reconstructions and officer involved shooting investigations and reconstructions. Tom regularly provides expert forensic testimony in state and federal courts throughout the United States.
Tom has worked with the U.S. State Dept and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, (IACP) in developing and delivering training programs involving evidence based investigations for ranking members of Iraqi police forces.
Tom is a nationally recognized speaker who has been providing training to law enforcement agencies nationwide for over twenty-five years. He is currently a faculty member for the National District Attorneys Association.

This webinar will present answers to questions that are commonly asked by veteran homicide and death scene investigators during “in person” training classes. Emphasis is placed on topics that are not typically covered in standard training.
Topics Include:
• How much blood should I expect to find on a murder suspect?
• Other than the obvious, where are the best places to look for blood evidence on my suspect?
• Can blood still be detected at the scene after it has been cleaned up?
• Collecting blood swabs vs collecting blood evidence
• Will blood enhancing chemicals affect DNA testing?
• Are there different types of DNA testing? How does each apply to my case?
• Can latent fingerprints be developed on anything?
• Why do I rarely find latent fingerprints on surfaces that are commonly touched?
• Why can’t the “perfect” latent print that I recovered be compared to my suspect?
• Why is it that some fired bullets can be identified to a particular firearm and others can not?
• What is the proper way to preserve a firearm that has been recovered from a body of water?
• Should I test for gunshot residue? Why is gunshot residue testing so con
