Course Objectives
Course Overview:
Date: December 1, 2022
Time: 1:00p.m. - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Have you ever noticed how sometimes in a training class the instructor will veer off of the prepared material to offer additional information based on his or her experience? Sometimes its a few extra notes to better explain the topic. Sometimes it’s just a better explanation than “the one in the book.” These “additional notes” or “aside information" tend to be extremely useful to us and they are often the points that we retain the best.
Police officers of all ranks are trained in firearms to one degree or another. This training is a compilation of those “additional notes” or “aside information" and is designed to present those more obscure facts about firearms and firearms evidence - the information not normally covered in general firearms training. Important facts and fundamentals of firearms and firearms related evidence will be presented in order to provide a better understanding of one of the most important topics in police work and death investigations.
Topics include:
• Anatomy of a cartridge
• Can a semi automatic pistol “accidentally” fire…understanding safety features and the parts that make the pistol work
• Anatomy of a revolver - Does anyone remember the revolver?
• Carbines v. Rifles
• Dynamics of discharging a firearm
• The “explosion” - muzzle blast and resulting gun shot residue
• Understanding rifling and its significance to shooting
• Understanding rifling and its significance to laboratory ballistics testing
• Lands and grooves rifling vs. polygonal rifling
• What do all those extra initials mean… Understanding calibers and the designations that go along with the cartridge
• What is +P ammunition?
• Properly securing firearms as evidence
• Properly securing firearms from bodies of water
• Properly collecting bullets and ejected cartridge casings at the scene
• Properly collecting fired bullets at the autopsy
• Properly securing clothing struck by fired bullets
• What happens at the lab: understanding the lab report and the available testing for fired bullets and ejected cartridge casings
• Where does the ejected casing go? Will it always eject to the right?
