1984 the “wave” began in the UK. In 1989 it hit the US. That “wave” was an acute awareness of contaminated statements and false or coerced confessions. Since then there have been numerous convictions over turned and high profile multi-million dollar lawsuits filed against US criminal justice agencies. Contaminated statements and false or coerced confession cases generated by loss prevention and risk management professionals in corporate settings have also come to light.

This increased level of awareness has lead to comprehensive legal and scientific examination to identify tactics, techniques and conditions that contribute to the problem. Unfortunately very few agencies have critically reviewed their in-house or contract training content to determine the tactics and techniques being taught are known to perpetuate an increased risk of false confessions and contaminated statements. Those agencies may be putting their cases, personnel and municipalities at risk of significant legal liability.
During this session you will learn –
1. The three specific causes of false confessions.
2. The subjects most vulnerable to making false confessions or giving false statements.
3. Erroneous beliefs about why subjects do or do not talk during interviews.
4. The difference between influence, persuasion, manipulation and coercion.
5. The good and bad interview and interrogation philosophies currently being taught at our academies.
6. Tactics interviewers should be using today to reduce the risk of contaminated statements and false confessions tomorrow.
7. Methods for protecting against the legal liabilities of false confessions.
